The Group
Roman studied chemistry in Vienna and Marseille before earning his PhD from the University of Vienna in 2008 under the supervision of Prof. Walther Schmid. He subsequently joined the group of Prof. Hans-Dieter Arndt as a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology in Dortmund. In 2010, he returned to the University of Vienna as a University Assistant. Since 2015, he has been a Senior Lecturer and independent researcher at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, and in 2017 he was awarded his Venia Docendi (Habilitation).
In 2020, Roman co-founded Mag-Lab (Vienna, Austria) together with Prof. Robert Konrat (University of Vienna, Structural Biology), with the aim to translate academic expertise into innovative applications in industry.
Our research is highly interdisciplinary and supported by an extensive international network of collaborators who apply the group's methods across diverse fields. The group also maintains strong partnerships with industry and is deeply committed to teaching, contributing five lecture courses, three laboratory courses, and three seminars that collectively reach more than 2000 students each year. Beyond the University, we actively engage in science communication by visiting high schools and participating in public outreach activities to promote natural science and inspire the next generation of scientists.
