Allgemeine und Organische Chemie für BiologInnen (300195)

...is an introduction to general chemistry with topics such as: the chemical bond; gases, fluids and solids; thermodynamics, kinetics, the law of mass action, acids and bases, redox-reactions and electrochemistry. The lecture then continues with the characeristics and reactivity of the main functional groups of organic compounds and closes with the most important classes of natural products.

Organische Chemie für Molekulare Biologen (300324)

...gives in-depht information about the main reaction-types of organic chemistry, stereochemistry and natural products (nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, fatty acids, terpenoids...) and covers the most important aspects of enzyme reaction mechanisms.

...deals with selected aspects of organic chemistry at the frontier of biology and is adressed to advanced chemistry students. The lecture contains topics such as: enzyme mechanisms and what the synthetic chemists have learned from nature (organocatalysis, catalytic antibodies...), the chemistry of cofactors, biomimetic synthesis, bioorthogonal chemistry...

Chemische Übungen für Ernährungswissenschaften (330001)

These courses give an introduction to the practical lab work for students of biology and the nutrition sciences. The topics include: pH and redox titrations, gas-volumetric experiments, organic synthesis, distillation, quantitative tests for functional groups, chromatography, NMR and IR spectroscopy, extraction of natural products...

winter and summer semester, 12 days of practical work per student, 3 mid-term and one final exam.
